International Olympic Committee (IOC) officials gave thumbs-up earlier in May to Beijing's preparations for the 2008 Games as they completed a three-day inspection tour. Despite choking pollution, sweeping human rights abuses, and media suppression through out the country, the committee was delighted with China's progress.

National Grand Theatre
Pedestrians and cyclists pass the by the construction site of China's new National Grand Theatre in central Beijing May 23, 2006. The egg-shaped structure has been designed by French architect Paul Andreu, and will cost 2.68-billion-yuan (US$328 million). It is being erected in spite of past doubts over whether it should be in the company of the solemn Tiananmen Square.
